Episode 5
"The Chikee"
Story of this episode
In Episode 5 of Fox Hollow Outdoors, I take Larken down to South Florida to kick off a true Florida adventure — the kind that pushes you out of your comfort zone and drops you right into the wild. From the crystal-clear waters of the Florida Keys to the vast, remote backcountry of the Everglades, this trip is about experiencing Florida the way very few people ever do.
Part 1 of this two-part series finds us spending several days deep in the Everglades, fishing remote waters and living on a traditional chikee — a raised wooden platform built directly over the water, far from roads, towns, and cell service. No land in sight. No outside noise. Just the sounds of the swamp, the elements around us, and the challenge of figuring things out as we go.
From navigating the backcountry by boat to setting up camp in the middle of nowhere, this trip showcases a side of Florida that most people never see. It’s not just about catching fish — it’s about the isolation, the unpredictability, and the experience of being fully immersed in a place that’s as beautiful as it is unforgiving.
This episode sets the tone for what’s ahead and gives a real look at life off the grid in the Everglades. And this is only the beginning. Part 2 coming soon.
