Episode 6
"Lucky Tuna"
Story of this episode
In Episode 6 of Fox Hollow Outdoors, I take Larken offshore in the Florida Keys for a completely different kind of adventure — one built around long runs, open water, and the nonstop anticipation of chasing tuna far from shore.
After spending time deep in the Everglades, this episode shifts the energy from remote backcountry survival to bluewater fishing in one of the most iconic offshore destinations in Florida. The Keys have a way of making every trip feel wide open. You leave the dock with a plan, but once you get offshore, the ocean decides what kind of day you’re going to have.
This trip is all about the chase. From covering water and looking for signs of life to getting lines in the water and waiting for that first real bite, offshore fishing keeps you locked in from start to finish. Every bird, every bait ball, every change in current can mean something. And when the rods finally go off, everything turns into controlled chaos.
Throughout the day, we run into a mix of species and plenty of action, but the main goal is tuna. Fast, powerful, and unpredictable, tuna are the kind of fish that can turn a quiet stretch of water into a full-blown battle in seconds. Every hookup brings a rush, and every cast feels like it could be the one that makes the trip.
What makes this episode special is the contrast from the first part of the season. The Everglades showed us the quiet, isolated side of Florida. Episode 6 shows the speed, energy, and intensity of fishing offshore in the Keys. It’s a reminder that Florida has so many different worlds packed into one state, and each one brings its own kind of challenge.
